Technical Overview
How Blink Protects Your Phone
Blink is a privacy protection layer for Android that operates entirely on-device. It uses legitimate Android APIs — the same enterprise device management tools that IT departments use. No root access, no bootloader unlock, no warranty-voiding modifications. Under 10MB installed.
The Five Layers
Blink's protection is not a single lock. It is five independent systems, each solving a different failure mode. Any layer can operate alone. Together, they form a defense that adapts to every scenario — from a curious glance to sustained physical coercion.
Invisible Installation
Blink appears on your device as a system utility. There is no reference to "Blink" anywhere — not in the launcher, not in notifications, not in settings. 7 disguise identities are available for free, with 150+ options on premium.
Anyone inspecting your phone sees a normal system tool. Opening it directly shows a minimal utility screen. The actual protection interface is only accessible through the volume trigger.
Continuous Foreground Monitoring
When protection is active, opening a protected app silently redirects to the home screen. No lock prompt. No error message. No visual indication that anything happened.
This is not a one-time lock. Blink monitors the foreground continuously. If a protected app is already open when someone picks up the phone, it is caught and redirected before any content becomes visible.
Apps Cease to Exist
With App Vault, selected apps are removed from the launcher and recents. They appear uninstalled to anyone inspecting the device. When you activate a session, they reappear. When the session ends, they vanish again.
Premium feature. Requires a one-time browser-guided setup (~3 minutes).
SOS Duress Mode
An alternate activation sequence triggers SOS mode. App protection stays fully active — blocked apps remain blocked. Your vault switches to its decoy face: designated decoy apps become visible while your real vault content stays sealed or is automatically erased by configured SOS actions.
There is no visual indicator, no notification, no behavioral difference. An observer cannot distinguish SOS mode from a phone with no protection at all. Designed for situations where you are being watched or coerced. Full coercion resistance requires App Vault configured with a decoy profile.
Self-Healing Services
Android aggressively manages background processes, especially on manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, and OPPO. If Android kills Blink's background processes, multiple independent recovery mechanisms bring protection back before any content becomes visible.
Protection resumes automatically. No user intervention required. No gap in coverage.
Activation
Session Model
Blink activates through a configurable volume button sequence. Nothing appears on screen during activation — no overlay, no animation, no sound. The sequence is invisible to anyone watching.
When a session starts, your protected apps return and become accessible. Lock the screen or end the session, and protection resumes instantly. The transition between protected and unprotected states is invisible to an observer.
There is no PIN prompt, no biometric challenge, no visible lock. The volume sequence is the key. Anyone who does not know it sees a normal phone.
Architecture
On-Device by Design
All processing happens locally on your device. There is no cloud, no server communication, no accounts. Blink cannot phone home because there is no home to phone.
PIN Security
PIN storage uses PBKDF2WithHmacSHA256 with a high iteration count. Credentials never leave the device. The cryptographic key is derived from your PIN, not stored alongside it.
Zero Network Traffic
Blink's background data usage is verified at zero bytes. No analytics SDKs, no crash reporting, no tracking pixels. The app has no internet permission beyond optional backup.
Optional Cloud Backup
If you enable Google Drive backup, your configuration is encrypted with your PIN before it leaves the device. Blink cannot read the backup. Google cannot read it. Only the same PIN can restore it.
Legitimate APIs
Blink uses the same Android enterprise device management APIs that IT departments use. Your device stays fully protected by Google Play Protect. No exploits, no root, no modifications.
